ERISA Defined
The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974. This law, which dealt primarily with pensions and retirement plans, includes a section exempting self-funded employer and union health plans from state regulation. Washington's health-care reform law--------the Health Services Act of 1993--------required a congressional waiver of this law so that the state could mandate employer-provided health coverage. The waiver did not pass, and the state law was subsequently changed.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a state may enforce certain of its banking laws against national banks through judicial enforcement proceedings, but not through non-judicial requests for information.
Northern Trust Deploys Cross-Border Pooling Solution for U.S. ERISA Plans

Northern Trust today announced the addition of the first pension funds governed by the U.S. Employee Retirement Income Security Act to its cross-border pooling platform. The U.S. pension plans invest in a U.S. limited partnership, along with Canadian employee pension and welfare plans, with approximately $4 billion in North American and European equity investments.
